In actuatlity, skills gapping is a serious challenge to the contemporary healthc are system because many organizations face the problem of the widening gap between skills of their employees and the desired skills organizations want their employees to have. The problem is that the gap grows wider as technology and science progress and employees fail to catch up with technological and scientific progress. Therefore, health care organizations have to solve the problem of skills gapping balancing the actual skills of their employees and desired ones.
In actuality, many health care organizations face the problem of skills gapping. One the one hand, health care organization focus on the employment well-qualified employees, but they are costly for health care organizations because well-qualified employees need high wages, which many health care organizations cannot afford. On the other hand, health care organizations employ professionals, who do not have the desired skills, but health care organizations invest in training of their employees to develop the target skills. In such a way, health care organizations often take into consideration their financial resources before they take a decision on which strategy to choose to close skills gapping.
In this regard, I would refer to the experience of my organization. I am a pharmacy technical specialist in the army. Since the beginning of the economic recession, the organization I work in focuses on saving costs. At the same time, the organization attempts to keep progressing. Therefore, the organization has to raise its requirements to the qualification of its employees. However, because of the consistent limitation of financial resources available to the organization, the management of the organization has refused from employment new professionals, who have the higher qualification because they need consistently higher wages compared to the wages employees receive at the moment. Instead, the organization conducted training courses for its employees to develop their professional skills and to improve their qualification. Basically, this strategy has proved to be effective because there are many young employees in our organization and they are eager to keep progressing and they want to develop new skills. Therefore, they are eager to participate in the training programs and they develop new skills and abilities fast.
However, training takes time to improve professional skills of employees. Therefore, training cannot solve the problem of skills gapping fast because employees need time to train new skills and to start implementing them in their regular work. Instead, employment of new well-qualified professionals can solve the problem of skills gapping fast but the employment of new professionals may raise another problem, the problem of their integration into the organizational culture and structure.
Thus, skills gapping is a serious challenge for health care organizations. In this regard, training of employees is the most effective solution, especially when organizations are limited in their financial resources and have time to train their employees.
